There is a situation existing in Guyana that has long gone out of control, the consequences of which are dire, I make mention of the dangerous or should I say murderous use, of illegal firearms. Seems the easiest thing to obtain these days is an illegal weapon, go out there and create havoc in society. You can hold up someone and relieve them of their hard-earned possessions among the other myriad of atrocities that go with its use. It is the most fashionable thing to do,to the extent that even teenagers as
young as 13 years old go around sporting guns like toys. Our country has become swamped with these weapons. If government does not take this scourge by the scruff of its neck then heaven help us all.
This reckless endangerment reached epic proportions last week when a young lad of only 14 years met an untimely death from a stray bullet from one of these Rambo guys. Some fool/s though it best to try out their newly acquired “toys” wild west style by indiscriminately firing their weapons in a populated area, the result, young Ryan Persaud was shot dead. A young, promising life with lots of potential snuffed out by person/s who really have no aim or purpose in life. This nonsense has to stop. Is this the society we want for our kids, where at any moment his life can be brutally taken? Certainly not a society where even you as an adult may be walking down the street only to be cut down by a bullet. Then, truly, Guyana would have become a dangerous place to live in. I would not want to live in, far less come to visit such a place. This situation must stop and stop it will right now. This means that drastic action has to be taken.
For starters, heads must roll among the police in that area for their inaction when the lawlessness was reported to them. But for their laziness in not responding on time Ryan is dead. This is the kind of attitude that is symptomatic of the police force that has cause for many a crime going unpunished. It is a sickening situation that has persisted in the force for much too long and it is time to stop it. I think the Minister of Home Affairs should take strong disciplinary action to correct this glaring violation of the people’s rights.
