GPL announces expansion of metering programme in Berbice

GUYANA Power & Light (GPL) has announced that it is expanding its countrywide metering programme to Berbice.
Beginning today, the utility will connect 3,000 for water service meters, including upgrades in Gay Park, Fort Canje and New Amsterdam.
In addition, customers from Johns Village to Port Mourant, Corentyne, will benefit from the 2,000 more and upgrades.
These activities form part of the GWI’s overall programme, which, according to Chief Executive Officer, Shaik Baksh, is pivotal to reducing its energy consumption.
“Low consumption by our customers will result in savings for GWI’s energy costs,” he stated, explaining that utilising less water would also assist customers to reduce their payments for the service.
He said research has shown that persons using water for domestic purposes are conscious of their consumption patterns when a meter is installed. They use only what is necessary, thereby contributing to the energy conservation drive.
Baksh added that GWI, through its Energy Manager, is implementing strategic initiatives for reducing energy usage throughout its operations.
He emphasised, however, that conservation by customers is vital to reducing the amount of electricity necessary to distribute water.
Small charges
“We are appealing to all customers in receipt of new water meters to monitor their consumption so that their bills will reflect small charges,” Baksh said.
He said water meters function well as conservation devices but, if customers do not monitor their use and lessen wastage, their water service charges will reflect high usage patterns.
In addition, to the installation of meters, Berbice customers will also benefit from the upgrading of water service connections which would improve the overall level of delivery.
A localised public awareness campaign will also be conducted by the utility to educate customers on the benefits of water service meters and it would include advisories and outreaches in areas where installations are currently being done.
