Fishers stranded on deserted beach after trawler sinks in Atlantic off Shell Beach

A trawler with several crew members onboard sank in rough seas while fishing in the Atlantic Ocean some miles off Shell Beach in the North West District last Tuesday.

According to reports the trawler from Georgetown was fishing between the Shell Beach and Iron Punt, an area which is regarded as very dangerous with high waves, when tragedy struck.

According to reports, the captain of the ill-fated vessel managed to get the trawler near to the Shell Beach shore before it went down and crew members were able to swim ashore.

Reports said that last Thursday a speedboat that was passing in the Shell Beach area with passengers from Venezuela to Charity spotted the fishermen stranded on the deserted beach waving their hands to signal for help.
The captain of the speedboat who was travelling far from shore in the ocean turned and headed for the beach to render assistance to the fishermen.
The Guyana Chronicle was told that two of the stranded fishermen swam out to meet the speedboat captain and inform him of their tragedy.
The fishermen said they were stranded on the deserted beach without water or food for several days. They begged the captain of the speedboat to take them to Charity but he said he could only assist by taking one person onboard.
However, the fishermen said they would not part from each other and the captain assured them that he would make a report about the tragedy at Charity Police Station.

The fishermen who said they were hungry and thirsty were given a bottle of water and a pint of channa by a woman who was travelling on the speedboat from Venezuela. The stranded fishermen have erected a makeshift tent with coconut branches on the deserted beach.
