A WEEK of significant activities has been organised by groups across the country to celebrate the 61st anniversary of the Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO), youth arm of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).
Making the announcement at a Freedom House, Robb Street press conference on Monday, member of the Georgetown PYO Steering Committee and Chairperson for the Anniversary Events, Ms. Gomati Kalicharran congratulated all the other groups in outlying areas and lauded them for what they have planned for the occasion.
She said the programme began from September 1 and concludes on September 8. Last Sunday saw a 10/10 cricket game and the continuation of the Michael Forde Dominoes Competition.
On Monday last, the PYO staged a regional blood drive on Main Street, in the city, to assist the National Blood Bank in its ‘Good Samaritan’ programme and more groups in other regions will be doing the same.
Among other things, there was a night of reflection (held last evening at Red House) with presentations on the past and present leaders in the organisation’s history.
FEEDING PROGRAMMES
PYO groups in Regions 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam), 3(Essequibo Islands/West Demerara), 4 (Demerara/ Mahaica), 5 (Mahaica/Berbice) and 6 (East Berbice/Corentyne) will host feeding programmes for chosen homes or orphanages in their respective areas.
Tomorrow, September 5, the PYO will seek to decorate Main Street, starting from the Bank of Guyana and concluding at the Ministry of Finance.
On September 6, there will be a walk from the Bank of Guyana to the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre, marking the birth of the PYO 61 years ago.
That same day, at 15:30hrs, an interactive session, involving President Donald Ramotar, will he hosted at the Cheddi Jagan Research Centre, High Street, Kingston, also in the city.
On that occasion, Mr. Ramotar will be rewarding a student of the PYO for having performed well at the 2013 Caribbean Secondary Entrance Certificate (CSEC) Examinations.
Kalicharran said although that concludes the PYO Georgetown programme, the line-up of events continues in Berbice, where several beaches are to be cleaned in an effort to beautify those locations.
Another member of the PYO Georgetown Steering Committee, Mr. Safraz Shadood said the grouping is much stronger now than it has been over the years, as it is widespread in almost every region of the country.
He said the PYO has helped to enhance the lives of young people in Guyana and this has made it bigger and better.
According to Shadood, the PYO has now assisted young persons, to shoulder responsibility as well as be community leaders and positive role models.
