ALL offices of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) are up and running following GECOM’s commencement of the fifth cycle of continuous registration on Monday.

altGECOM’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), Mr. Vishnu Persaud, advised the Guyana Chronicle yesterday in a telephone interview that a total of 416 registration transactions were recorded on Monday, September 2, the first day of the fifth cycle of continuous registration.
Noting that all 28 permanent registration offices across the 10 administrative regions of Guyana are up and running, Persaud said operations are going smoothly, and there has been no problem thus far.
He said that no temporary registration office has been established for this cycle, and that the Better Hope, East Coast Demerara office, which was established as a temporary office in the fourth cycle, has been made into a permanent office because of the number of transactions that have been going through that office.
This fifth cycle of continuous registration will end on November 23.

GECOM advises that any Guyanese citizen by birth, descent or naturalisation, who would be 14 years or older by December 31, 2013; or any citizen of a Commonwealth country who has been living in Guyana for one year or more, is eligible to register. Such persons are required to visit the registration office that is responsible for their area of residence to apply for registration, or they may uplift their National Identification Cards if they had previously been registered and had not yet uplifted that document.
GECOM also advises that it is the civic duty of all Guyanese who meet the eligibility requirements to apply for registration during this fifth cycle of continuous registration. “By so doing, you would (i) be taking the required step towards being issued a National Identification Card upon completion of the registration process, and (ii) be included in the Official Lists of Electors for future elections, if you meet the other eligibility criteria,” GECOM has said.
Information on registration offices and how one can apply for registration is detailed in a notice in local newspapers, and on the GECOM website.
