Defendant facing several charges released on own recognisance

CHIEF Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, yesterday, released Kevin Charles on his own recognisance when he appeared in court on charges of assault, disorderly behaviour and unlawful possession of an offensive weapon.

The defendant (no address given) pleaded not guilty to the three offences, particulars of one which alleged that, on Friday, August 23, at Brickdam Police Station, in Georgetown, he unlawfully assaulted Police Constables, Jermaine Brown, Ferron Wilson, Deochand Sukhdeo and Joel Benjamin.
Another charge said, the same day, while in a public place, he behaved in a disorderly manner and the third allegation said Charles had a knife in his possession without lawfully authority or reasonable excuse.
Police Corporal, Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said that around 14:00hrs, ranks on mobile patrol stopped and searched the defendant and after they found the knife in his waist, arrested him.
But he started to shout that he did not want to be placed in custody and subsequently, in the lock-up, he assaulted the officers.
In answer to the Chief Magistrate about how he knew he had to attend court, Charles responded that police called and told him of the charges.
He was bonded to keep the peace pending the outcome of the cases but has to be back in court on September 16.
