I extend heartfelt greetings to the indigenous peoples of Guyana during this special month that is set aside each year and appropriately designated as Amerindian Heritage Month 2013, serve to focus increased attention on the rich cultural heritage and the unquestionable
achievements being made in Guyana’s first peoples, our Amerindians. It is for all of us in our multicultural nation to continue to appreciate the remarkable customs, traditions, values, religious beliefs, art, craft, food, music and dances of the diverse groupings that constitute our indigenous peoples. They are a constituent element of our national cultural tapestry and we are indeed fortunate to be enriched by the heritage of our Amerindian communities. Our indigenous peoples hold a special place in our nation’s heritage.
I urge continued respect for our indigenous peoples and for all Guyana to celebrate their achievements while respecting their traditional way of life.
May we always value our indigenous peoples whose ancestors first made our country their home and who continue to make sterling contributions to Guyana’s development.
Happy Amerindian Heritage Month 2013!
