Linden-Kwakwani road repairs starting this week

THE Ministry of Public Works announced, yesterday, that it was poised to conduct urgent repairs on sections of the Linden-Kwakwani Road in Region 10 (Upper Demerara/Berbice).
Public Works Minister Robeson yesterday said that engineers and supervisors visited the deplorable road at Kwakwani to get an understanding of the situation on the ground.
The minister stressed that the state of the road had nothing to do with government neglect but rather the excess rainfall in the early part of this year coupled with the heavy traffic which traverse the roadway.
Hinterland Road Engineer in the Ministry, Mr.Naeem Mohamed said yesterday that mobilisation of men and equipment was ongoing with funds guaranteed from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC).
He said the preparations are being done as a matter of urgency and that the work should start in less than a week.
Mohamed said the ministry will be employing as many contractors as necessary to expedite the process.
The damaged state of the roadway from Linden to Kwakwani has been a source of controversy over the past few weeks, with some residents resorting to blocking the route with logs as a form of protest.
Roadblocks were reported over the last weekend with only emergency vehicles, such as ambulances being allowed to pass.
