NATIONAL awardee, Harold Davis, who made history as the first local Chairman of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), was laid to rest following a church service at the Trinity Methodist Church on High and Leopold Streets yesterday.
A packed congregation including, President Donald Ramotar, a former GuySuCo board member, and Opposition Leader, David Granger paid their final respects to the man who served with distinction in many well respected positions.
The funeral service included prayers, hymns, tributes, musical selections, scripture readings and the signing of the book of condolence.
The 1980 Cacique Crown of Honour (CCH) recipient was a teacher for 13 years; and after returning from the United States with a B.Sc in Social Administration and MA in Sociology from the University of Ohio, began working as a Personnel Officer at Skeldon Sugar Estate.
He worked his way up to Personnel Director and in 1976 became the first local Chairman of the Corporation when it was nationalised.
Among the numerous positions in which he served were Pro-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, past District Governor of Rotary International, and Chairman of the Board of GTM.
His involvement in the church and the Ptolemy Reid Rehab Centre occupied most of his later years. He died at of 89.
