Twenty-one-year-old police constable Kevin Bruster, also called Alex, was placed on $200,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty yesterday to answer a charge of rape.
Bruster of 203 Coldigen, East Coast Demerara was not required to plead to the charge which states that on May 15 at Sherima Police Outpost at 14 Miles Issano, he engaged in sexual penetration with a 26-year-old female without her consent, while being a serving member of the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
Police Inspector Oswald Pitt, prosecuting, told the court that on the day in question the accused at Sherima Police Station, located at 14 miles Issano, had sexual intercourse with the complainant against her will. Subsequently, a report was made and an investigation was carried out. After the report was submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice, the defendant was charged with the present offence.
Bruster was represented by attorney-at-law Latchmi Rahamat who requested that her client be granted bail. She explained that her client was on duty that day when a woman and a group of persons came to be checked in.
According to the attorney, each individual was checked in individually, including the complainant and they then left the police outpost. The defence lawyer contended that her client is denying the allegation brought against him, and at no point could he have committed such an offence at the police outpost without anyone witnessing the act.
Prosecutor Pitt then objected to bail on the grounds of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence but the objection was overruled and bail was granted until the matter comes up gain on September 3.
