ALPHA `The Hammer’ United booked a place in the final of the Slingerz/National Association of Women’s Football tournament with a 3-0 win over Camptown at the Georgetown Football Club (GFC) ground on Sunday night.
In the first of two women’s semi-final matches, Bartica scored a 4-0 win over their counterparts from West Demerara.
Alpha, the former Kashif and Shanghai champions, will now await the outcome of the second semi-final which will be contested between tournament organisers Slingerz and BK Western Tigers tomorrow night at the GFC ground to know their opponents.
Like Alpha United, Bartica will await the outcome of the next women’s semi-final match between Georgetown and Berbice to know who they will play in the final which is set for September 1.
In the Ansa McAl-sponsored tournament Alpha captain Dwight Peters, midfielder Anthony `Awo’ Abrams and Andrew Murray found the back of Camptown’s net in the 45th, 49th and 93rd minutes respectively.
In the women’s semifinal, Olivia Osidmo recorded a brace in the sixth and 30th minutes while Kerry Thomas and Candida Ambrose found their target in the 51st and 58th minutes respectively.
Peters sent his team into the lead from the penalty spot after being fouled by Camptown custodian Oswald Cornette.
The penalty decision, while being the right decision, did not find favour with some spectators who felt that a red card should have been issued to Cornette since he was the last line of defence.
Abrams made the score line 2-0, two minutes after he was introduced into the game.
He received a through pass from Peters, travelled to the opposition’s 18-yard box and placed the ball into the left-hand side of the goal.
With just minutes in injury time remaining, Peters changed the point of attack from the right side to the left and slipped the ball to Murray who received well and played a combination of passes with Abrams in Camptown’s defence before shooting to goal, but Cornett did not gather well and Murray ran on to the loose ball that rebounded from Cornette and was patted into goal.
After the game, team coach Wayne `Wiggy’ Dover said, in his opinion, the game was one of the team’s poorest display as his charges did not play to their true potential. “But I must give credit to Camptown,” Dover stated, adding “we’re steadily improving and come the final, we’ll do what we are out to do.
The men’s final is also billed for September 1 and will be contested at either the Georgetown Cricket Club ground or the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground, depending on the weather.
The winner of the men’s final will receive $2M, while the other top three teams will receive $1M, $500 000 and $300 000 respectively.
The winning team in the women’s segment will receive $200 000 while the other top three teams will be rewarded with $100 000, $50 000 and $25 000 respectively.
