‘Jack-of-all-trades’ remanded over armed robbery, other charges

QUINCY Letlow of 13 John Fernandes Squatting area, West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Faith McGusty yesterday accused of armed robbery, resisting arrest, disorderly behaviour and cop assault.

Police Corporal Seon Blackman, prosecuting, indicated that the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) will not be applied to the first offence, which said that on Wednesday, August 14 at D’Aguiar Park, East Bank Demerara, while using a gun he robbed Lavern Manifold of one Blackberry cellular phone, one gold chain, one purse and cash amounting to $5,000, a total value of $244,000.
In relation to the other matters, the 28-year-old defendant pleaded not guilty. The prosecution stated that on Thursday, August 22 at Ruimveldt Public Road, he resisted arrest by peace officer 21557 Teon Hope, acting in the execution of his duty.
It is further alleged that on the same day at Ruimveldt Public Road, he behaved disorderly at Ruimveldt Police Station. In addition, on the same day at Ruimveldt Public Road he is accused of unlawfully assaulting  peace officer, Teon Hope.
Attorney-at-law, Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat, representing the defendant, told the court that on that day his client who is a jack-of-all- trades, that is to say a mason and a carpenter, was just representing his sister-in-law, Monifa Thompson who was facing other charges separately, when he was charged.
However, Corporal Blackman objected to bail, citing the nature of the offences, the punishment it attracts, and the fact that he poses a flight risk. He added that a gun was used and the defendant was positively identified by the VC at the station.
Bail was refused and Letlow was remanded until September 2.
