GEORGETOWN Magistrate Fabayo Azore remanded three persons to prison when they appeared before her on Wednesday, August 21, charged with obstructing the course of justice.
Security guard Clement Persaud, 58; his common-law wife, Amrita Mearns; and her adopted 15-year-old daughter, all of Lot 34 Sophia, Greater Georgetown, pleaded not guilty to the offence allegedly committed between Monday, July 1, and Wednesday, July 31, at Georgetown, when they reputedly attempted to pervert the course of justice by knowingly and willfully preventing Edward Samaroo from attending court.
Police Sergeant Ramsahoye Rambajue, prosecuting, objected to bail being granted the defendants by citing the seriousness of the offence and the penalty attached. He opined that should the defendants be granted bail, they would likely not attend their trial.
Moreover, he said the 15-year-old had, with the VC, been previously charged with break and enter.
Persaud told Magistrate Azore that they cannot afford to lodge the surety, since they each had to pay $10,000 station bail.
Bail was refused, and the matter was adjourned to September 13.
