GUYANESE junior tennis players competing in the ITF Wilson Junior Open, in Kingstown, St Vincent and the Grenadines, suffered mixed fortunes in two finals on the penultimate day of competition at the Grassroots Tennis Center.
Jamali Homer, a debutant at this level of competition, walked away victorious in the Girls 14’s consolation final after she defeated home girl Shania Williams in a three-set thriller 4-1, 2-4, 4-1.
However, her joy was shortlived when she returned later in the afternoon to play in the final of the Girls 14’s doubles competition, teaming up with compatriot Afruica Gentle.
Playing against the top seeded Benn sisters from St Vincent, Amarlia and Gabrielle, the Guyanese juniors showed great skill and finesse to easily grab the first set 6-2.
The second set was more closely contested, with the Vincentian sisters claiming the vital break in the win 7-5. The Guyanese duo came close to winning the title, only to lose in a close contest’s third-set super tie-breaker 11-13.
Even though they lost in the final, the pair still very much appreciated the opportunity to compete at one of the more highly rated junior tournaments in the region.
The team returns to Guyana this weekend.
