Slingerz/NAWF F/ball tourney : Camptown face Riddim Squad, Slingerz take on Topp XX : … as quarter-final action begins

CAMPTOWN will face Riddim Squad while Slingerz take on Topp XX as quarter-final action in the Slingerz/National Association of Women’s Football tournament gets under way today with a double-header at the Georgetown Football Club ground.

In the opening game from 18:30hrs, Camptown, who recorded a 5-0 win against Uitvlugt in a first-round encounter, will go into tonight’s game a confident bunch, but cannot afford to get complacent, since Riddim Squad, who edged Den Amstel 3-2 in a penalty shoot-out after the two teams were locked 1-1 at the end of regulation and extra time, are well known for their ability to fight to the end.
The feature game between Slingerz FC and Topp XX, which is scheduled to start at 20:30hrs, promises to be really exciting, as Slingerz, though based in West Demerara, is made up of many Linden players and added to that, the team’s coach Charles `Lily’ Pollard hails from Linden and is a former national captain.
Topp XX, on the other hand, are known for their ability to win tournaments and according to the team’s coach, Lincoln Zephyr, tonight’s match should provide football fans with some real excitement.
Zephyr said Slingerz are a very tough team to get past, but his charges have been training extremely hard over the past two months and come tonight, they will do what is expected of them.
The coach informed that the team includes players who have played or are still playing at the national level and these players include midfielders Quacy Johnson who is the team’s captain and Travis Watterton and defenders Kevin Sullivan.
Also in the team’s lineup are strikers Colwyn David, Keon Sears and Terrance Aaron. Carlos Browne will perform duties between the uprights.
Zephyr reminded that Topp XX players have been playing high quality football over the years and fans will witness this for themselves tonight.
“We are not going to go down easily, we know Slingerz FC are about the best team in Guyana right now, so we expect a tough game when we take to the field,” Zephyr stated.
Slingerz drubbed Net Rockers 4-0 on Tuesday evening at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground, while Topp XX beat Milerock 2-0 in an all-Linden affair.
Repeated efforts to get a comment from Pollard proved futile.
For tonight’s opening game, Camptown will be dependent on players Rumel Gordon, Jamal Greaves, Malcolm Wilson and Devon Forde, among others.
