The Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation(GPHC) on Thursday last received a timely donation from the New York (Guyana) Medical and Humanitarian Mission which supplied three flat screen television sets and three DVD players.
The donation follows a request from the hospital to the group which has been visiting here for the past three years and making similar donations.
Speaking with the Guyana Chronicle following the handing over on Thursday, president of the group, Dr. Tara Singh, said that over the last three years the group has donated computers, medical supplies, a projector and a DVD player.
The latter device was to facilitate the holding of training sessions and seminars for the nursing staff. The group in addition to its donations also provides counseling for under privileged children and those living in homes and orphanages, Dr. Singh said.
In determining what is best needed for the hospital, the team would travel to Guyana on either official or unofficial visits to the hospital. They would then meet with the management of the hospital or departmental heads to determine what are the needs and how those needs could be fulfilled.
During the group’s present stay in Guyana, they have been able to conduct several clinics at a number of orphanages and supplied medical supplies.
The president of the group also pointed out that the donations are often in keeping with what the team of eight could afford and if there is a difficulty fulfilling the request, then the group seeks the assistance of other persons.
Meanwhile, the team’s next trip to Guyana is slated for 2014 and already it has been determined what supplies the hospital will be receiving.
This publication was informed that the group will be sending several complete computer systems for the Georgetown Public Hospital, and also on the team of eight are two doctors who hail from Guyana.
