American citizen charged with murdering his wife

AN American citizen who was placed on a one year bond by a local magistrate for assaulting his wife, has been committed to stand trial for her murder.

Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo has ruled that a prima facie case had been made out against him, during a special sitting at the Reliance Court on Thursday.
Consequently, his trial is fixed for the October sittings at the Berbice Assizes.
Ramdhani Persaud, called Prack, allegedly murdered his wife, Bibi Shemdeen Kairodeen, at their Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice home on March 20, 2012, ending a spate of domestic violence.
Kairodeen, called Sharmilla, 43, was discovered in a pool of blood by her younger son, whom she had moments before called for help.
Ravendra, 13, was on the upper flat of the two storeyed building when he heard his mother pleas for help, and running to the lower flat which houses a bedroom and a grocery shop, he observed that the bedroom door was locked, but saw his father hurriedly putting items in a bag.
He retreated to the upper flat, closed the adjoining door behind him, and called his maternal uncle, telling the relative, ‘Come, Daddy stab up Mammy’.
Persaud and Kairodeen had lived together for 20 years, and parented two teenage sons Dharendra,16, and Ravendra.
