Guyana cop medals in Caribbean Pre Cadet table tennis championships

COMING out of the Team segment with gold, two silver and two bronze medals, Guyana collected another silver and two bronze, as competition in the Caribbean Pre Cadet Table Tennis Championships moved into the doubles division yesterday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, Homestretch Avenue.

Guyana’s Neveah Clarkston and Terence Raush ended with silver in the Under-11 Mixed doubles.
After overcoming compatriots Abigail Martin and Niron Bissu 9-11, 11-5, 11-8, 11-4, Clarkston and Raush went under 11-12, 5-11, 3-11 against Idelsa Baez and Jesus Lozano to hand the title to Dominican Republic. Earlier in their first match of the day Clarkston and Raush ousted Trinidadians Shurjah Welch and Brandon Lee Young 8-11, 11-4, 11-9, 11-9.
Martin and Bissu, who got into the semifinals off a win over Aruba’s Mikaya Mathilda and Jonatan Paredes, shared third place position with Guyana’s Selinas Jackman and Tyriq Saunders, after they lost in the semifinals against Baez and Lozano.
In the 13-and-under Mixed doubles Guyana made it all the way to the quarterfinals before all three entries were taken out by Trinidadians. Simran Bissu and Jeremy Singh lost against Jasher De Gannes and partner Jousha Maxwell, who went on to win the title.
Singh also played again when he teamed up with Dovonna Bess and went under 11-8, 11-7, 11-5 against Shanekah Johnson and Jakeem Welch.
Kristie Lopes and Miguel Wong lost 5-11, 5-11, 5-11, 11-10 to Chelsea Fong and Roberto Johnson.
In Sunday’s team matches Guyana struck gold in the Girls Under-11 category. Though the Girls lost 1-2 against a Mixed team that comprised players from Aruba, Dominican Republic and Barbados, a 3-1 win against Trinidad and Tobago was enough to hand them the title
Against the Mixed team, Jackman was the only one who managed to secure a win for the Guyana side after she took out Kaleah Martyr 11-3, 11-4, 11-4. Clarkston lost 0-3 to Baez and Martin lost 1-3 against Makayla Mathilda.
Martin could not stand up against Shreya Maharaj when Guyana faced the Trinidad team, however Clarkston and Jackman both claimed wins against Shurjah Wlech, while Jackman also had a 3-1 win against Akayla Lucas.
Guyana won second and third in the Boys Under-11 category, won bronze in the Girls Under-13 category and silver in the Boys Under-13.
The doubles matches continued yesterday afternoon and were expected to be completed last evening, as competition in the singles matches are expected to begin today.
