After the Administration of Justice Act was applied, Persaud pleaded guilty to the offence, which stated that on Wednesday, August 7, at Charlotte Street Georgetown, he stole from Rafeek Khan one gold chain valued $100,000.
Assistant Police Superintendent Lewis, prosecuting, said that on the day in question, the virtual complainant (VC) was walking along Charlotte Street when the defendant overtook him, snatched his gold chain from around his neck, and ran away.
The VC raised an alarm, chased after Persaud, and when the defendant fell to the ground, some scuffling ensued between them, during which the VC noticed that the defendant swallowed his chain.
A report was made to the police, and the father of two was arrested and charged with the offence.
On August 8, the defendant defecated the chain, and the VC identified the chain as his.
When the magistrate asked the VC Khan if he had anything to say, he responded with, “Can I have my chain back now?” whereupon the magistrate responded in the affirmative. And having considered Persaud’s plea and the seriousness of the offence, she sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment.
