SURINAME edged Guyana by a 2-1 margin when the two countries met yesterday in the football segment of the Inter-Guiana Games at the Police Sports Club ground, Eve Leary. Playing on a soggy surface caused by overnight and early morning showers, Suriname were able to convert goals off the boots of Jean-Paul Sastra in the 23rd minute and Sergino Eduard in the 43rd minute, while Guyana’s lone goal was registered by Jamal Harvey in the 76th minute.
Sastra sent his team into the lead after receiving the ball in the 18-yard box from a right side cross and executed a flat right foot shot that sent the ball into the right side corner of the Guyanese goal catching Guyana custodian Devon Charles off his line at the left side corner of the goal.
Twenty minutes later, the Dutch team registered their second goal after being awarded a corner kick from the southwestern corner. The ball was lobbed into the 18-yard box as Eduard jumped above Guyana’s defence and directed it into the opposition’s net at second post, while Charles was caught flat-footed at first post.
With a 2-0 lead, the Surinamese kept the pressure up and raided Guyana’s goal but their shots went wide of the mark and they had to settle for a 2-0 lead at the interval.
Despite facing defeat, the locals took the field for the second session in a lackadaisical manner and it was not until after approximately 20 minutes into the session that they upped the ante, but the Suriname defence stood up to the test.
However, the locals pulled one back after being awarded a free kick that was taken by Simon Emmanuel from approximately 35 yards out on the northern side of the field (right wing). Emmanuel lobbed the ball into the visitors’ 18-yard box and Jamal Harvey executed a powerful right foot first-time shot that had goal written on it from the time it left his boot.
From the start of play, Guyana enjoyed more ball possession than their opponents and came very close to scoring on two occasions but both times the ball narrowly missed its target.
Firstly, Harvey had ran onto a loose ball on the right side and squared it across Suriname’s goal mouth and with an open goal facing him, Domini Garnett missed the ball as his intended left foot shot went above the ball.
Guyana captain Andrae Hector also missed a golden opportunity when Harvey raced onto a loose ball, took control and lobbed it just outside the 12-yard box where Hector missed a sitter at an open first post as Suriname custodian Chaquille Wilsterman was flat-footed at second post.
Suriname also had goal-scoring opportunities but the soggy conditions on the Eve Leary field prevented them from converting at least four more goals.
During the first half, Suriname took four direct shots to Guyana’s goal, two of which rocked the net. Guyana on the other hand did not get in any direct shots, but instead they fired at their opponents’ goal three times, but all went wide of the mark.
In the second period, Suriname had four direct shots to goal as against four from Guyana, one of which scored.
Three yellow cards were issued during the game with the locals receiving two and Suriname the other.
