THE Den Amstel Community Centre ground will come alive tonight when the Stag-sponsored Slingerz Goals for Gold football gets under way with a double-header card beginning at 18:30hrs. The feature match brings together the home side and Riddim Squad while Camptown of Georgetown face Uitvlugt of West Demerara.
The tournament is being organised by Slingerz Football Club, in partnership with the with the National Association for Women’s Football, under the Stag beer brand.
The tournament was launched on Tuesday at the Ansa McAl boardroom, Beterverwagting, East Coast, Demerara.
The winning team will receive $2M while the other top three teams will collect $1M, $500 000 and $300 000 respectively.
According to Slingerz manager Colin `BL’ Aaron, the following teams have confirmed their participation in the tournament – Alpha United, Camptown, Riddim Squad, Guyana Defence Force, Fruta Conquerors, Pele, Western Tigers, Topp XX, Net Rockers, Seawall United, Uitvlugt Warriors, Den Amstel, Rosignol United, Grove High-Tec and Slingerz.
Six women teams will also form part of the tournament and their matches will be conducted simultaneously with the men’s matches.
Of the six women’s teams, two are from Berbice while one each will come from Georgetown, Bartica, Linden and West Demerara.
According to Aaron, because Berbice will be fielding two female teams, Georgetown and Bartica will draw a bye to the second round.
The organisers have decided to play the men’s and women’s matches simultaneously in an effort to develop women’s football locally.
The tournament will continue next Wednesday with another double-header at the GFC ground in Georgetown.

The final of the competition is scheduled for September 1 at the GCC ground with Uitvlugt ground being the alternative venue.
