Guyana retain both IGG table tennis titles

GUYANA’S Inter-Guiana Games table tennis coach Linden Johnson had his prediction fulfilled when his male and female teams comfortably defeated Suriname to retain their titles at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, yesterday. According to the rules of the games, Guyana is allowed to have an extra team, in this case – Guyana ‘B’. However, if an A-team is defeated by a B-team the points do not count.

The first title Guyana retained was the Under-19 females as they defeated Suriname in three straight games in their best-of-5 format.

Guyana’s Akeicia Nedd sank Afielle Hooghart in three straight sets then Priscilla Greaves defeated Zoue Hooghart in three straight sets.

Nedd and Greaves combined to take on both Hoogharts and crushed them in the same fashion to secure the title.

Earlier, Guyana B females defeated Suriname 3-0 as Anna Joao defeated Zoue 3-0, Jewel Todd defeated Afielle 3-0 then the pair of Todd and Joao sank the Hoogharts 3-0.

The Guyana A got past Guyana B 3-0. Nedd blanked Joao 3-0, Greaves trounced Jewel Todd 3-0 and Nedd/Greaves defeated Joao/Todd 3-0.

In the male final, Guyana A defeated Suriname three games to two; David Duncan lost to Maurice Lie 1-3, Stefan Corlette crushed Adesh Jahwair 3-0, Duncan/Corlette edged Lie/Jawahir 3-2, Corlette lost to Lie 1-3 and Duncan overwhelmed A. Jawahir 3 – 0.  

Guyana A males defeated Guyana B 3-2; Duncan lost to Elishaba Johnson 1-3, Corlette defeated Kevon Corbin 3-1, Duncan/Corlette sank Johnson/Corbin 3-1, Corlette lost to Johnson 1-3 and Duncan trounced Corbin 3-1.

Guyana B squeezed past Suriname 3-2; Corbin lost to Maurice Lie 1-3, Johnson thrashed Adesh Jawahir 3-0, Corbin/Johnson whipped Lie/Jawahir 3-0, Johnson lost to Lie 0-3 and Corbin crushed Jawahir 3-0.
