Berbice top NGSA students honoured

SEVENTEEN students in Regions 5 and 6 in Berbice were recently awarded for their outstanding performances at the 2013 National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) exams, by the Lions’ Club of New Amsterdam in collaboration with overseas-based Guyanese, Dr. Tulsi Dyal Singh.

The top eleven students in East Berbice and the top six from the West Coast received prizes that will benefit them when they commence studies at their respective secondary institutions.
Past President of the N/A Lions’ Club, Mr. Samuel Singh, in his remarks to the gathering at Vryman’s Erven on Saturday last, noted that many students do not apply themselves to reading and as a result many of them fail to comprehend examination questions and it eventually causes them to fail in their academics.
He then urged: “You must read as often as possible, pick up any material, be it a book or newspaper and read. Reading is important and it will help you in life.”
Singh noted that the Lions’ Club is always pleased to be associated with children who have a desire to pursue higher learning, adding that his organisation will continue to work in collaboration with civic-minded persons and other organisations that are willing to contribute to the moral and academic development of children.

Dr. Tulsi Dyal Singh, a native of Berbice, has placed emphasis on academic achievers in the Ancient County for over two decades and continues to work closely with the education authorities. Over the years he has invested millions of dollars in books and other learning materials for schools.
In his remarks, Dr. Singh said: ” Congratulations to you all on your recent successes, it is not the end of the road; I urge you to put your best foot forward as you begin your journey through secondary school. I urge you to apply yourselves at all times and accept each challenge that you are confronted with.”
Dr. Singh also pledged further support towards the education sector, with the hope that Berbice will produce more top students who will make Guyana proud.
Although the top NGSA students were informed about the award ceremony, only eight of them were present to collect their prizes. Those present were Keana Samuels and Jenese Hinds of the St. Therese’s Primary; Region 6 top student Renee Bisnauth and Tajesh Goberdhan of Cropper Primary; Ebony Mc Neil of School of the Nations, Shanice Henry of Edinburg Primary; Asaf Ali of Tain Primary and Melissa Rama of Crabwood Creek Primary School.
