AUDREY Richards of Lot MM Bent Street, Wortmanville pleaded not guilty before Magistrate Judy Latchman on Wednesday to a charge of abusive language.
Particulars of the offence state that on Friday, August 2, at Wortmanville, she verbally abused Agnes Fortune.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, told the court the VC and defendant are neighbours, and on the day in question, they had a misunderstanding that therefore provoked the breach of peace.
The defendant was represented by Attorney-at-law Mr. Leslie Sobers, who explained that Fortune is always taunting his client. He said that he sent Fortune a letter from his law firm requesting her to desist from tormenting Richards, since she was spreading rumours and throwing slangs that Richards performs obeah.
Meanwhile, 62-year-old Fortune, of Lot NM Bent Street, Wortmanville, who was also charged, pleaded not guilty to behaving in a threatening manner towards Richards on the same day at Wortmanville.
Sergeant Hunt added that they are neighbours who had a misunderstanding, and on that day Fortune had some substance in her hand and threatened to throw it at the VC.
According to Fortune, she and Richards always used to communicate; they used to converse about ‘Young and the Restless’, the media and current changes taking place in society.
Magistrate Latchman told Fortune that the magistrate who would conduct the trial will listen to the story; the case is being called only to determine whether she should be granted bail or not.
Richards was granted $10,000 bail, and Fortune was ordered to post $30,000 bail. They were both bonded to keep the peace pending the outcome of the matter.
Magistrate Latchman told each party to keep in their corner and say nothing to each other until September 6.
