DIRECTOR of the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA), Mr. Indranauth Haralsingh said, yesterday, that Guyanese can look forward to a lot of spinoff benefits with the return of international cricket to Guyana. He was also referring to the sold out crowd for the first One Day International (ODI) West Indies versus Pakistan game, played earlier this month at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence, East Bank Demerara.
Subsequently, approximately 70 percent of the seats were filled for the second ODI at the same venue and he observed that the games brought a lot of visitors to Guyana.
“The Limacol Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is a huge investment in cricket. For the first time, we have had a Guyanese branded product that is fully sponsoring the CPL so, indeed, this is a signature accomplishment. It will not only help with branding the product but also the destination,” Haralsingh stated.
He continued: “We are very happy that Limacol has come on board to do the overall sponsorship. We are also pleased with the naming of Clive Lloyd as a brand ambassador for Limacol as well. He is one of the most successful West Indian Captains and he has a lot of expertise in this area, both as a player in the past and as a person managing cricket.”
The GTA Director said, presently, all of the hotels in and around Georgetown are filled with CPL officials, media operators and cricket fans from around the world.
He explained that taxi drivers, restaurant owners, tour companies, craft and other local businesses, particularly those selling clothing, too, stand to benefit from the hosting of this mega event.
Haralsingh said it is expected that tickets for every match will be sold out, especially since the timing of the games do not clash with work/business hours.
“There are a lot of benefits for everyone; it’s a win-win for Guyana and all of the tourism stakeholders. The more mega events we can have in Guyana the better it is for our businesses, our investors, our entrepreneurs and for the country as a whole. We need more foreign currency and more revenue, so cricket is good for Guyana,” he maintained.
