Three injured in Mandela Avenue accident

THREE persons, including an allegedly drunk driver and a woman were rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital just after 21:00 hrs last night following an accident on Mandela Avenue in the vicinity of the popular ‘Go- Slow’ area.

This newspaper was told that the two vehicles, PNN 6791 and PKK 9983, were heading in the same direction when the accident occurred.

It was reported that motorcar PNN 6791 was attempting to undertake PKK 9983 when the driver who was committing the road lawlessness realised that he could no longer successfully undertake the other vehicle because there was a parked vehicle ahead of him.

He then reportedly turned in an attempt to avoid hitting the parked vehicle and the rear of his car was clipped by PKK 9983, whose driver it was reported had already began taking evasive measures.

As a result, PNN 6791 toppled several times and ended up on the eastern parapet of the Mandela Avenue pinning the driver and passengers for a short period.
Public spirited citizens rushed to the scene and freed the trapped.

Over at the hospital, the driver who was evidently under the influence, was seen smiling and laughing as if nothing was wrong. This was even as his female passenger had to be brought into the Accident and Emergency Unit of the hospital on a stretcher.

The fire service responded to the scene and were seen inspecting the wrecked vehicle which was turned bottom-up. (Leroy Smith)
