The assurance was given yesterday by the Regional Executive Officer (REO) of Region 4 (Demerara/Mahaica), Mr. Deolall Rooplall. He said the issue was raised after the discovery that the hose of the mobile pump at Buxton had been leaking almost one-third of the flow it is supposed to dispose.
Rooplall explained that the equipment is the responsibility of the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA) and, as such, the latter has promised to have it repaired within the week.
He said the repair cannot be done while pumping is continuing and, consequently, the mechanism had to be disconnected to avoid leaking and for it to be fixed very soon.
Rooplall pointed out that the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) does its part by ensuring, among other things, that pumps along the coast are well fuelled.
Heavy rains
Others at Triumph and Cane Grove have been working around the clock, due to the heavy rains, so as to ensure there is no build-up of water, resulting in major flooding, he reported.
Over the past week, several parts of the country, including the East Coast Demerara, were flooded following continuous rainfall.
East Coast areas which were greatly affected are from Ann’s Grove to Sparendaam, with many people lamenting that their homes were inundated.
Some, with whom the Guyana Chronicle spoke, said their ground level houses had approximately eight inches of water and they had to pile sandbags at their entrances.
Shops that were closed after business persons levitated their goods to safety still suffered minor losses.
There were instances in which RDC workers were dispatched to various locations to clean drains and remove blockages, to facilitate the faster receding of water.
