Guru Purnima at Guyana Sevashram Sangha today

Guru Purnima (Teacher’s Day) is observed on the full moon in the month of Ashadha (June or July) to honour Sage Vyasa, who authored the Srimad Bhagavata, the Mahabharata and 18 Puranas and compiled the four Vedas by fasting and worshipping him to gain knowledge, wisdom and blessings.  On this day also, teachers (gurus) are honoured by their students (disciples); and in turn teachers bless their students. The relationship between the teacher and the student is considered very sacred and spiritual in nature. It is based on maturity of gyan (spiritual and academic knowledge) and sadhna (spiritual practice). The disciple is expected to submit to the awareness of the correlating need for spirituality in tandem with academic studies; while the teacher harbours only one prayerful thought, “May this disciple be uplifted.”
The Guyana Sevashram Sangha would be honouring today the founder of their organisation, the divine Acharya Srimat Swami Pranavanandaji Maharaj (1896 – 1941), who was founder of the Bharat Sevashram Sangha,
Guru means teacher, and the supreme teacher is Lord Shiva, who has manifested in many forms to serve mankind on earth.  Acharya Srimat Swami Pranavanandaji Maharaj was one such manifestation.  Sevashram is a combination of two words – seva and ashram, which means service and sanctuary.
