Bascombe’s helmet-trick steers Waramadong into semi-finals

A helmet- trick off the boot of Whazir Bascombe saw Waramadong (Reg. 7)brushing aside Santa Rosa(Reg. 1) 4-0 to secure a place in the semi-finals of the Digicel  Schools Football Championships, which continued yesterday at the Ministry of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue. Playing on a very heavy surface which was caused by overnight rain, Bascombe’s team took the attack to the opposition from the first whistle but Santo Rosa responded in spurts and at end of the first session the two teams were deadlocked at 0-0.
It was not until the 62nd minute that the flood gates opened as Bascombe registered his first of four goals.
Four minutes later he secured his second with the third coming in the 71st minute and the fourth in the 82nd minute.
During the first half, Waramadong  dominated the proceedings attacking mainly down the middle of the field.
But on one counter attack, Santa Rosa came very close to scoring when Burchell Holder took the ball down the left wing played it across Waramandong’s goal mouth to Shane LaRose while drawing Waramandong’s custodian Gerald Issacs off the goal line but La  Rose’s right foot shot sent the ball crashing onto the upright and rebounding back into play.
As the two teams battled for midfield supremacy which Waramadong continued to control, the large crowd kept urging them on and when the session ended Waramandong had registered 12 direct shoots to their opponents’ goal keeper Selwyn Miller .
The Region 7 side also took six shots which were wide of target the side also forced six corner kicks but failed to convert any.
Santa Rosa on the other hand attacked their opponents mainly from down the left wing and they tried out Issacs with eight shots, five of which were direct to him, the others were wide.

From the start of the second period Waramadong made their intentions known and was awarded a free kick in during the first minute of play, but from approximately 35 yards out the kick which was taken by Kendrick Williams could not get past Miller.
They however opened their account 17 minutes into the session when Bascombe received the ball in a packed 12-yard box from a right wing pass and slotted it home.
Four minutes later, Waramandong’s left winger crossed the ball across Santa Rosa’s goal mouth drawing Miller to first post and Bascombe at second post tucked it into an open goal.
Santa Rosa made a double change and replaced Brendon Phillips with Fernando Hunter.
Region 7 made the score 3-0 with a shot that was taken by Bascombe from way outside. The ball sailed to second post and struck the lower part of the upright and went across the goal line into goal.
Santa Rosa, looking to open their account, made a double change, bringing on Warren Norton and Keith DaSilva,but this did not help things as Bascombe recorded his fourth goal from just outside the 18-yard box into an almost empty goal. Miller was caught flatfooted at second post.
