N/A Town Constabulary marks 39th anniversary with prayer service – told standing order is your weapon to execute your duties

THE New Amsterdam Town Constabulary which was established on July 1, 1974, celebrated its 39th anniversary on Sunday with a prayer service at the New Amsterdam Town Hall.

altDuring the prayer service, ranks of the constabulary sang hymns, read verses from the Holy Bible and did a skit to showcase their flair for the dramatic arts.
Pastor Winifred Heywood , who is also a councillor, delivered a sermon to the gathering and encouraged the members of the constabulary to maintain a bond which will enable them to function effectively.
“Sometimes when we operate like we don’t care, we lose. What we don’t cherish and use, we lose. Cherish your job, no matter how little you earn, work diligently and honestly,” she advised.
Deputy Mayor of N/A, Mr. Harold Dabydeen, in his address to the gathering, said that every anniversary brings a reflection on the past and  he urged the ranks to take note of previous experiences and do their job as mandated.

Follow Standing Ordersalt
“Your standing order is your weapon to execute your duties. Go out and take action against those illegal vendors and those who are bent on violating the laws of the municipality; you don’t need the permission of the Mayor and Town Council to do your job efficiently,” he declared.
The N/A Town Constabulary was established under the Mayorship of the late Attorney-at-Law Bhairo Persaud, with one superintendent, one assistant superintendent, four sergeants, four corporals, twenty-four constables and one intelligence officer. Former Mayors Maurice Haniff and Errol Alphonso, who served as councillors during the 1970s also played integral roles in drafting the standing orders of the Constabulary.
To date, the human resources of the Constabulary have declined tremendously with only one sergeant, two corporals and eleven constables, with the support of three security guards, manning the security of the township under the motto: ‘Justice, Courtesy and Co-operation’.
Town Clerk Mrs. Sharon Alexander, in her address to the municipal security officers,  charged the ranks to perform to the best of their ability  from now until the 40th anniversary observance, when tangible rewards will be given as a mark of appreciation for those who fully dedicate themselves to their jobs.
“Remember the oath that you took. I encourage you to follow your motto and standing orders in the execution of your duties. Be aware of your responsibilities so that you can fully apply yourselves on the job,” she said.
Prior to the commemorative ceremony, the Town Clerk and the Deputy Mayor inspected the guard of honour on the New Amsterdam market tarmac.
