ALMOST 30 karatekas from the Guyana Karate College (GKC) left the country yesterday for Barbados under the leadership of Sensei Jeffrey Wong, 6th degree Black Belt, Senior Instructor and Vice Chairman of the GKC, to attend and participate in the upcoming Caribbean Karate Championships set to start in that Island today and end tomorrow.
This is after undergoing weeks of rigorous preparations at their various dojos at Timehri, at the Marian Academy and the Malteenoes Sports Club.
The teams selected are Boys 8-10: Tyler Orderson, John McGrath & Antoine Herod; Girls 8-10: Hannah Farinha, Rebecca Ramlall & Rachel Ramlall; Boys 11-13: Yannick Rameshwar, Mark Wong, & Michael Hing; Girls 11-13: Alliyah Wong, Tashana Wong, & Alyssa Persaud; Boys 14-16: Otto Harris, Carlos Gonsalves, & Desmond Fernandes; Girls 14-16: Christy Dey, Mickelly Rahaman, & Ashley Seelall; Adult Male: Eric Hing, Romel Rameshwar & Mathew Hurry; Adult Female: Jennifer Rameshwar, Nikita Clarke, & Claire Cheeks-Martelly; Masters: Aubrey Bettencourt, Kennrick Cheeks, & Medharishi Ramdhani
The Karatekas selected for the Individual Divisions other than those in the teams are: Boys 8-10: Sashan Ramkumar, Boys 11-13: Jonathan Connelly, Girls 11-13: Rhea Connelly, Girls 17-19: Kerry Ramkumar.
Team GKC, who have the accolade of being the first runners-up at the last International Karate Daigaku World Shotokan Karate Championships, held in Toronto, Canada last year, produced a remarkable feat, defeating many karate powerhouse countries along the way. Participants are poised and are positive of doing Guyana proud on the international stage once again, this time at the regional level.
