East Ruimveldt man remanded on unlawful possession of gun charge

JAMIE Meyers, 28, of Lot 1 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown was remanded to prison on Thursday, charged with unlawful possession of a firearm.

Before Magistrate Judy Latchman, he pleaded not guilty to having a .32 semi-automatic handgun, on Tuesday July 9, on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.
Police Corporal Renetta Bentham, prosecuting, said the defendant was seen on the road acting in a suspicious manner and, when stopped and searched was found to have the gun.
The prosecutor successfully objected to bail, pointing out that no special circumstances were advanced and citing the seriousness and prevalence of the offence.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat, representing Meyers, had argued that the weapon was not found on the latter but in a yard.
The lawyer also complained that Meyers had been locked up for four days but the magistrate ruled in favour of the prosecution and the defendant has to remain incarcerated until July 15.
