THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP) is in the final stages of preparations for its 30th Congress which will be held from August 2 to 4 in Port Mourant, Berbice under the theme “Strengthen the Party, Build Unity, Advance Democracy”. This was disclosed by Chairman of the National Congress Committee and Home Affairs Minister, Mr. Clement Rohee during a media briefing at Freedom House on Robb Street, Georgetown yesterday.
According to Rohee, the National Congress Committee has been working feverishly to put in place all the details and the general arrangements to ensure a successful congress.
CONGRESS COMMITTEE IN BERBICE
In addition, he stated that there is a local congress committee on the ground in Berbice, which was established to ensure that delegates, observers and guests are comfortably housed, accommodated and fed when they arrive on location.
Rohee pointed out that the upcoming congress will be the first that the founding members, Cheddi and Janet Jagan will not be present, noting that Janet Jagan was still alive and was present at the last congress which was held in Diamond, East Bank of Demerara.
However, he related that the only person alive that is associated with the founding of the PPP in 1950 is Mr. Ashton Chase, and he is expected to attend the congress, based on an invitation that the party will extend to him.
Rohee said that party groups from across the country are constantly meeting and working to fulfil the relevant constitutional criteria for the selection of delegates and observers to the congress.
He added that groups are also tasked with the responsibility to send resolutions of various types, dealing with localised or other issues, to the congress.
He further stated that the groups are also authorised to send amendments to the party’s constitution and the party’s programme, and have been tasked with raising funds for the hosting of the congress as well.
MAKING NOMINATIONS
Party groups are also in the process of making their nominations for individuals to be elected to the Central Committee of the party. Rohee explained that the party’s Executive Secretary is the person responsible for receiving those nominations and the Credentials Committee will process them to ensure that the persons nominated fulfil the necessary requirements.
PPP Executive Secretary, Mr. Zulfikar Mustapha said that any member of the party who is active, who belongs to a group and who has five consecutive years of membership is entitled to be nominated to the Central Committee.
Meanwhile, Rohee reported that a number of overseas parties have been invited to be present at the congress, while some of them have been requested to send messages or greetings.
He also stated that members of the PPP who have died since the last congress will be honoured, and awards will be given to those members who have served the party for 25 and 50 years.
He emphasised that the PPP is looking forward and working towards a successful congress, and is very optimistic that the results will put the party in good stead and guide the government in its policies, thereby moving the country forward, notwithstanding the challenges that it is confronted with from time to time.
