Marijuana in freezer defendant remanded

JACOMA Webb, a miner/businessman of Lot 1525 Central Amelia’s Ward, was remanded to prison yesterday on a drug charge.
The 35-year-old appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged with having on Friday, July 5, at Mackenzie Police Station, also in Linden, had in his possession 40.3 grammes of cannabis sativa (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking.   Police Sergeant Vernetta Pindar, prosecuting, told the Court, on that day around 12:50 hrs, ranks conducted a search on motor vehicle PPP 4088, in which Webb was a passenger and found, in a freezer, a quantity of seeds and stems of the prohibited plant.
Attorney-at-law Ms. Latchmi Rahamat, for the Defence, said the vehicle is owned by Ashton Fraser, who was hired to deliver the freezer in the interior and that Webb denied any knowledge of the illegal substance but accepted ownership of the freezer.
The lawyer claimed that the freezer was in not in the possession of Webb on the previous night, and that he had been assaulted by the police after the search, having fallen to the ground following the receipt of a slap to his face.
Defence Counsel said Webb is presently on bail on a similar charge at Mahdia Court, in Potaro.
However, the prosecutor successfully objected to the grant of pre-trial liberty for the defendant, noting that no special reason for the grant was provided by counsel.
The case has been transferred to Christianburg Court, also in Linden, for July 16.
