Fined marijuana defendant must also do community service

LEONARD Steven, of Lot 294 West Ruimveldt, Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Ann McLennan on Thursday and pleaded guilty to a drug charge.

The defendant, 26, admitted that, on Tuesday, July 2, in West Ruimveldt, he was in possession of one gramme of cannabis (marijuana).
Police Corporal Bharrat Mangru, prosecuting, told the court that, around 20:00 hrs, ranks on patrol saw Steven acting in a suspicious manner and a subsequent search of a transparent ziplock bag he was carrying yielded leaves, seeds and stems of the prohibited plant.
Steven, who claimed that the narcotic had been given to him, was fined $15,000 and ordered to do two months of community service, every Monday and Friday at Brickdam Police Station, also in the city.
