Boxers ready as Fight Night moves to the West Side

BOXING fans, primarily on the West Coast of Demerara, will get an opportunity to whet their long-awaited appetites tonight, thanks to the staging of another Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) ProAm Fight Night card which punches off at 20:00hrs at the Uitvlugt Community Centre ground.

At a press conference hosted in the studios of NCN, Guyana Boxing Association Technical Director Terrence Poole spoke about the various amateur bouts that will be on show.
He said a number of fighters coming out of Essequibo will get a chance to showcase their skills and talent against their opponents from Georgetown, adding that the future stars are all excited and ready to show their punches in what is being described as Essequibo invading Georgetown.
The nine-bout card will see in the 50-54 lb category, Jamie Kellman boxing out of the Young Achievers Boxing Gym (YABG) come up against Quacy Wright of the Essequibo Boxing Gym.
In the 75-79 lb category, Squalie Wright will get an opportunity to show his fellow Essequibo Boxing Gym team mates what he can do when he matches gloves against Shemar Bumbury of the Forgotten Youth Foundation.
In the 105-109 lb category another Essequibian in Shaka Moore will contend with Stephon Green of the Harpy Eagles while in the final amateur bout for the night, GDF’s Quacy Boyce will face Travis Hubbard of the Harpy Eagles Gym in a 118-125 lb category.
In the professional segment of the card two fighters are expected to make their debuts.
The highly-touted Romero Norville, who has an impressive 91 amateur fights with only eight losses, will start his professional career when he matches gloves with Eversley Browne in a four-round encounter.
Norville, who has been described by president of the GBBC Peter Abdool as an excellent fighter, will be attempting to start his career on a winning note despite being warned by his opponent’s coach that the match will not go the distance.
However, while Norville opted to remain silent, Browne’s coach predicted that his charge will end the fight in the third round – a prediction Norville disagreed with stating that it will end in the second by him.
Another debutant, Laured Steward will be matching gloves against Anson Green in a four-round encounter.
Unlike Norville, Steward represented Guyana twice in Barbados as an amateur in the Goodwill tournaments and while he has only fought 37 times as an amateur, he indicated that he is ready to begin his professional career and will be doing so in grand style when he takes Green out before the end of the four rounds.
The veteran Troy Lewis will get an opportunity against Kelsey George in yet another four rounds while Errol Trotman and Leon Moore will square off once again, this time for six rounds.
Meanwhile the icing on the cake is expected to be a scorcher when Revlon Lake and Dexter Gonsalves battle for the National Junior lightweight title.
The boxers attended the weigh-in last evening at the Water Chris Hotel and all promised to do their part when the card gets going later this evening, with Slingers Sound System providing fans with musical entertainment as the GBBC promises to give fans their $1 500 entrance fee worth of action.
