Action-packed cycling programme from July 6

AN action-packed weekend starts next week Saturday as National cycling coach Hassan Mohamed hosts the 4th annual 50-mile cycle road race along with the launching of two annual programmes. On Saturday July 6, the second annual Malta Supreme Youth Cycle Programme commences at the National Park Circuit; on the Sunday the road race comes off then the following day the 37th annual Teach Them Young Cycle Coaching Programme begins at the National Park Curcuit.
The Seven Seas Multivitamins and Dr. Chase Nerve Foods-sponsored 50-mile road race will commence at Wales Police Station at 08:00hrs and proceed to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
The Veterans, Mountain Bikers and Females will turn back at Uitvlugt Community Centre and finish at the Harbour Bridge.
The first six finishers along with the first three Juniors, Veterans, Mountain Bikers and Females will receive prizes. The first Over-60 Veteran will also receive a prize.
There are eight prime prizes to be won during the course of the race. At the last road race, Geron Williams won the seniors in a time of 1hr 53mins 16.95secs. Paul DeNobrega was the top junior, Talim Shaw – the top veteran, Michael DeRoche – top mountain biker and Naiomi Singh – top female.
Meanwhile, the Malta Supreme Youth Cycle Programme will see races in the BMX 6-9, 9-12 and 12-14 years categories. The Veterans and Mountain Bikers will also be in action along with the feature events that are the juveniles and invitational races.
Robin Persaud won the invitational event last year in a time of 1hr 20mins 5.97secs while Alonzo Ambrose was the top juvenile.
On Monday July 8, the National Sports Commission-sponsored Teach Them Young Cycle Coaching Programme begins and will run for eight weeks, Monday – Friday from 09:00hrs to 11:30hrs.
The programme is for schoolboys, schoolgirls, beginners and all those who are interested. It was started in 1977 during the July-August break for schoolchildren who were on their vacation and it is conducted by the National cycling coach.
The programme is free.
