MOHAN Persaud who is currently serving a three-year sentence, was on Wednesday 5th June hauled before the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court to answer to another charge. It was alleged that Persaud, on Saturday 1st June, 2013 at the Lusignan Prison had in his possession nine grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking. He pleaded guilty to the charge.
In his explanation, Persaud told the court that on the night in question there was a power failure at the penitentiary. However, when the lights were restored an officer came and searched his bed, but there was no indication that anything was found.
He said further that he was escorted on a routine trip to the hospital the next morning without any issues being disclosed. However, upon his return from the hospital he was told that the officer had unearthed marijuana during the initial search the night before.
The 29-year-old also told the court that he was serving a three-year sentence which only commenced three months ago on a similar charge of possession of narcotics.
After listening to the defendant’s claim which suggested that he was framed, Magistrate Zamilla changed his plea to not guilty and set a date for trial.
He was then remanded to prison until 29thJuly.
