FAST bowler Romario Shepherd-DeJonge and spinners Steven Sankar and Mark Hamilton each snared a five-wicket haul for his respective team yesterday, the first day of the second round of action in this year’s Guyana Cricket Board (GCB)/GTM Under-19 Inter-County three-day tournament. At the Police Sports Club (PSC) ground, Shepherd-DeJonge took 5 for 27 for the defending champions GT&T Berbice, who routed a hapless Essequibo for 114, before they replied with 199 for 3 at the end of the day’s play, for a handsome first-innings lead of 85 with seven wickets in hand.
At the Everest Cricket Club ground on Camp Road, points leader Demerara, who defeated Essequibo in their first-round encounter, dismissed the President’s XI for 81 in their first innings, thanks to Steven Sankar’s 5 for 17.
However, Demerara were bowled out for 141 in reply, for a first-innings lead of 45 thanks to Mark Hamilton’s 6 for 47 while at the close of play, the President’s XI were 5 without loss facing a deficit of 40 runs.
At Eve Leary, GT&T Berbice, who were held to a draw by the President’s XI in their first-round fixture, asked their opponents from the Cinderella County to take first strike and routed them easily, as only skipper Ricardo Adams 27 (3×4, 1×6), Mark Gonsalves 25 (2×6, 2×4) Avenash Persaud 19 (2×4, 1×6) and Ricardo Peters 15 (1×6, 1×4) showed resistance to the Ancient County bowling.
Peters and Adams added 40 for the second wicket, following the demise of Persaud who was caught off the bowling of Shailendra Shameer, who, along with skipper Shawn Pereira, grabbed 2 wickets each for 11 and 23 runs respectively, in support to Shepherd-DeJonge.
Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai also took a wicket for GT&T Berbice, who got a solid start. Devin Baldeo 71 (10×4), Ashkay Homraj 51 (6×4, 2×6) and Sharaz Ramcharran 26 to finished the day on 199 for 3 from 65 overs.
Baldeo and Homraj added 82 for the first wicket, with the latter posting his 50 from 34 balls with six fours and two sixes, while the former faced 86 balls for his half-century, hitting seven fours in the process before Herry Greene, who has so far taken 2 for 69, removed both batsmen.
However, Baldeo also added 67 for the second wicket with Ramcharran, who not only got to his half-century, but also carried the team to first-innings points in the process, before he was caught at backward point off Greene, who saw several chances that were offered by both batsmen being grassed by his teammates.
Adams (1 for 23) removed Ramcharran before the close of play, which came with GT&T Berbice enjoying a lead of 85 runs, with David Latchaya 36 and Motie-Kanhai 0 their not-out batsmen.

In reply, Demerara were bowled out for 141 off 46 overs, with their skipper Kamesh Yadram 69 (9×4, 1×6), Tagenarine Chanderpaul 21 (2×4, 1×6) and Brian Sattaur 17 (2×6, 1×4; 12 balls) offering some resistance to the bowling of Hamilton and Narayan, who scalped 3 for 39 in support.
Yadram faced 88 balls and struck seven fours and one six off Hamilton for his half-century while overall he batted for 121 balls and struck two more fours before he was the ninth batsman to be dismissed, as Hamilton and Narayan spun webs around his teammates.
When play resumes today for the second day’s action, the President’s XI will be looking to wipe off their deficit of 40 runs and at the same time set their opponents a formidable total, while at Eve Leary, GT&T Berbice will be looking to extent their lead, giving their bowlers a chance to run at the Essequibians.
