In Region 1… : Revetment works starting soon on San Jose bridge

REVETMENT works on the bridge linking Kumaka and San Jose in Region 1 (Barima/Waini) is expected to commence in two weeks as the contract has been awarded for mobilising equipment and materials. Regional Executive Officer (REO), Mr. Nigel Fisher told the Guyana Chronicle at Kumaka, last Sunday, that the Ministry of Finance has reviewed and certified the correctional estimates and gave approval for the start.
He said the job includes correcting some defects on the existing structure.
On Sunday, after prolonged rainfall and a high tide, water covered a part of the approach to the overpass, forcing residents to walk on the edge of the installed revetment.
As a result, some vehicles had to cease movement in the direction of the flooded area and commuters crossing in either direction were forced to use the revetment although it was considered dangerous.
Residents remarked that the quality of work, design and materials used in the original construction were substandard and would, soon, have caused a collapse.
The community which has a population in excess of 3,000 sees another 2,000 passing through it en route to the other two sub-regions, Charity, Essequibo Coast and Georgetown in Demerara.
