AN outpatient of the New Amsterdam Hospital is alleging that she was assaulted by a doctor on duty during an examination at the Ear, Nose and Throat [ENT] Clinic on Thursday. Ms. Yulana Sutton, an employee of Sigma Labs, told members of the Berbice media that she has since made a verbal report to Mr. Allan Johnson, administrator of the hospital, and a subsequent report and statement to ranks at New Amsterdam Police Station.
However, when Guyana Chronicle contacted Minister of Health, Dr Bheri Ramsarran via telephone of Saturday afternoon, he was unaware of the incident, but promised to have it fully investigated as soon as the complainant’s statement is submitted to the health authorities.
Reports are that the named medical practitioner is alleged to have assaulted and used derogatory remarks on Ms. Sutton who has expressed deep fear since the incident last Thursday.
She told the media: “I usually attend his clinic, but, I am so scared to return after what occurred last Thursday.”
According to the 25-year old mother she is usually treated for nose bleeding.
Last Thursday she went to a private health institution where she met the doctor, who also practices at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
After an inspection, she was advised to go to the ENT clinic .The said practitioner proceeded ahead of her, and on her subsequent arrival, she was told that a piece of gauze will be inserted to stop the blood flow.
“But it was very painful procedure and when he inserted the gauze I jumped backwards, as the nose is a sensitive organ. Consequently, the gauze fell and the doctor told me to relax. He said relax, and he started to slap me while calling me names … ‘Stupid girl, you come to waste my time over nose bleeding. He then held my head and start shaking it. I got a headache instantly. I work in the medical field and have never heard of a patient being slapped on their head and shaken so that they could relax. No patient should have to endure being called names just because you need the assistance of that doctor at the time.”
However, despite the trauma, Sutton, has expressed gratitude to the eventual assistance by the said doctor who subsequently prescribed medication.
‘He even asked me if I needed sick leave, and requested that I return the following day for the medical certificate,” Sutton said.
However, after returning home, her face became painful and swollen from the assault, which resulted in her making a report to the Police Station.
Sutton was thereafter instructed to go to the new Amsterdam Hospital , where she was medically examined and treated , after which , a medical certificate was obtained.
