These comments come even as the relatives of the injured young businessman claim they are aware of who may be connected to the man’s shooting, and that information has been communicated to the police.
Last Saturday night, two men on a CBR motorcycle rode up to the young Gonzalist as he stood at an Albouystown street corner opposite his home and open fire on him. The 22-year-old received two bullets to his left foot and one to his right. He was then left to lie in a pool of blood until his sister came to his rescue.
This publication subsequently learnt that, after shooting the man, the two on the CBR rode around the block and returned to where they had shot the young man, but by then he had already secured himself in the area.
Asked yesterday about the status of the investigation, a police source would only say they are investigating. “That same shooting there got nuff problems, and is a gang war they just start there when they shoot that boy,” the police source said.
When this newspaper revisited the scene of the shooting yesterday afternoon, the victim had been discharged from hospital and was not at home. He is in the business of scrap metal collection and sale, and was said to be out vending his metals.
One relative said that while he is able to walk a bit, the man is not able to move about as he used to, at least not just yet. She said that he is moving around with the aid of a cycle.
Last Saturday, the man’s sister told this newspaper that she was standing on the corner having a discussion with her brother when she left to go and get something to drink. She said that as she returned, she realized that her brother was lying on the pavement bleeding with suspected gunshot wounds to his feet.
She immediately raised an alarm, and the young man was picked up and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he underwent immediate surgery to have the bullets removed.
The family named an individual whom they claim is well known by the police and who has also been seen publicly in the company of some very senior police officers from time to time. There were also reports by persons in the area that the man, who operates a lucrative illegal operation in the Albouystown area, tends to have numerous policemen visiting the establishment from time to time.
Relatives of the injured man have said that whenever the police are approached about the suspect’s behaviour, including threats he usually makes to other family members of the shot young man, those are never properly investigated. They recalled a recent incident in which the suspect’s dog had attacked relatives of the shot man, but the dog bite victims were locked up by the police, since it was alleged that the men had attempted to rob the dog’s owner.
