PENELOPE Castello, the 54-year-old woman who had appealed for justice after a vicious knife attack by a man, on April 15, 2011, has died.
She succumbed at the Diamond Regional Hospital, East Bank Demerara, about 07:10 hrs on Sunday morning. She had been admitted there after complaining of severe chest pains.
Castello called ‘Penny’ had her left arm almost cut off by a knife wielder who attacked her in the wee hours of the morning while she was sitting in her house from where she operated a business named ‘Kozy Nook’, a restaurant and bar.
The incident left the victim in unbearable pain and permanently disfigured by the injuries that caused her never to regain the use of one hand and fingers on it.
The mother of four had made several reports to the Police on the East Bank of Demerara but, up to her death, the known perpetrator was never arrested and could be seen in the village of Soesdyke.
Costello’s daughter, Amy Webster told the Guyana Chronicle, on Tuesday, that after what happened, her mother was always in terrible pain and endured many hardships as a result.
She said, to date, justice has not been served and the attacker is so ‘bare faced’ that, sometimes, he visits the bar and was there last Saturday night.
Her mother, who was described as a kind-hearted person in the community, was known for her friendly and endearing personality and will surely be missed by many, including, her neighbour/friend, Mike Charles.
She will be laid to rest on Monday after the results of a post-mortem are revealed.
