OPPOSITION Councillors of the Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam) Regional Democratic Council (RDC) have reported that persons are destroying the bamboo vegetation along the banks of the Supenaam Creek and mangrove trees from the foreshore at La Belle Alliance, also on the Essequibo Coast.
Speaking at the RDC meeting, earlier this month at Anna Regina, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Councillor, Mr. Wazir Latiff made the report about the bamboo trees.
He pointed out that the trees are helping to protect the banks from erosion and their destruction can lead to breaches of the embankment which can cause serious flooding of farms and homes along the river bank.
Latiff called on the RDC to investigate the matter and halt the destructive action.
Meanwhile, newly sworn Alliance For Change (AFC) Councillor, Mr. Bowanie Persaud said Government is spending large sums of money to plant mangrove trees along the foreshore, to protect the sea defence and coastland from the Atlantic Ocean but some persons are cutting and destroying those on the foreshore at La Belle Alliance/ Richmond.
He said he has seen many persons cutting the vegetation for garden purposes and urged the RDC to take strong measures to stamp out the practice.
Regional Chairman, Mr. Parmanand Persaud, after listening to the other Councillors, concurred that mangrove trees are planted to help protect the foreshore and prevent erosion.
He promised that the matter will be followed up and informed Councillors that the Ministry of Agriculture would be looking to plant more of the trees on the La Belle Alliance foreshore shortly.
