At Anna Regina… IMC to construct revetment to prevent market flooding

THE Interim Management Committee (IMC) of Anna Regina Town on the Essequibo Coast will be constructing a timber revetment on the western side of the market, near a drainage trench.

It is to prevent excess rainfall water from overflowing onto the concrete floor of the old Anna Regina Market
A Market Committee meeting, last Wednesday, was informed that the place had been flooded after heavy overnight rain and vendors/stallholders were very angry about the situation.
The Acting Market Clerk, Mr. Wazir Dhanraj reported that the drainage trench overflow because of heavy, consistent rain and IMC members, after discussion, decided that sand bags must be placed immediately to stop the flow pending erection of the timber structure in the future.
The proposal was approved by the committee and it will be taken to the July statutory meeting for consideration.
The old Anna Regina Market, which was built in the 1960s, had not been designed to withstand the current climate change and, as such, the People’s Progressive Party/Civic  (PPP/C) Government, with vision, built a modern replacement at Bush Lot for vendors/stallholders and shoppers, who could all be comfortable during the rainy weather.
But some of the intended beneficiaries, who do not like changes and development, are bent on remaining at the previous location although it is vulnerable to flood even from the lightest rainfall, because of its design.
The IMC is, however, pushing for the modern Bush Lot Market to be fully utilised every day, with all vendors/stallholders making use of the facilities available to them.
The IMC aims to have all vending from the road shoulders stopped and will move aggressively to end the illegal activities within the township.
