RYAN Soris, 24, of Lot 31 Second Street, Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman yesterday, charged with obstructing a police officer and unlawful assault.
He pleaded not guilty to the offences which alleged that they were committed on Sunday, June 16, in Station Street, Kitty, Georgetown, when he unlawfully obstructed Sergeant Alexis Webster acting in the execution of her duty and unlawfully assaulted Constable Narine at Kitty Police Station.
Defence Counsel Kendecia Rodney, representing the self-employed man, said he has an unblemished police record and is not a flight risk.
The lawyer requested reasonable bail, pointing out that she heard different stories. She said, at Kitty Station, she was told that Webster had been assaulted but, at Alberttown Station, she was informed that Jahvir, the son of the owner of Seeta’s Bar, was the assault victim.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, said Paul Singh had been arrested and the defendant tried to take him away from the police.
The prosecutor said the defendant held on to the policeman and pushed him down, then dealt him a cuff to his face.
Soris was granted $20,000 bail on each of the charges and has to be back in Court on July 5.
