THE Ministry of Home Affairs (MOHA) on Friday last said that based on a police report on the investigations conducted into an explosion at Kwakwani on March 2nd 2013 at about 06:00 hrs, they are concerned about the manner in which the disposal of the expired explosives was undertaken.
About 13 persons were injured when an explosive went off at the Bauxite Company of Guyana Inc. (RUSAL) in Kwakwani. Several workers were transporting a quantity of expired explosives with the intention of disposing them when “something horrible went wrong”.
The explosives were condemned, but due to their condition they had to be handled with care, which clearly was not the case.
The ministry said that a more efficient methodology could have been employed and it is hoped that the incident of March 2nd 2013 would be a lesson learnt for similar activities to be undertaken by the company.
The ministry received the police report on its investigations into an incident on 02-03-2013 where there was an explosion of expired explosive devices and which resulted in injuries to persons and damage to a vehicle belonging to Rusal, a press release stated.
The MOHA said they are satisfied that a proper investigation into that unfortunate incident was conducted by the Guyana Police Force (GPF).
