13th P&P Insurance Programme : DeNobrega outsprinted Pollydore to take feature event

FOLLOWING his inability to defend his Junior/Juvenile crown in this year’s P&P Insurance Brokers and Consultants Limited-sponsored 13th Annual cycling programme held around the inner circuit of the National Park, Paul DeNobrega utilised his sprinting prowess to good effect, to take the feature event in a time of 1h.21m:09secs from Godfrey Pollydore yesterday. Thirty-three cyclists faced the starter for the event, following the completion of several others that were carded for the day and as early as the fourth lap, Pollydore and Raymond ‘Steely’ Newton made their move to the front before they were wheeled in by the peloton.
Cyclists of the calibre of Robin Persaud, Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams, Warren ‘40’ McKay, Walter Grant-Stuart, Jude Bentley, Junior Niles, Kennard Lovell, Christopher Holder, Christopher Persaud, Hamza Eastman and Montel Anthony, just to name a few, were in the peloton when, Pollydore, DeNobrega and Shane Budhram made their move to the front in the 11th lap.
The trio worked together to increase their lead, a feat they achieved as they also lapped several other competitors, establishing their firm grip on the event – the first to be held at the venue within a month, following the completion of the 31st Annual Independence three-stage cycle road race.
With 10 laps to go and realising their pursuers had no real chance of catching them, the trio took a break in the saddle, but displayed the true meaning of the phrase ‘sprint prize’ with Pollydore and DeNobrega being involved in several battles for the prime.
The race to the finish line commenced just before the final turn for home and with the absence of McKay, Geron Williams and Alanzo Greaves, DeNobrega showed that he is adept with the sprint, by outsprinting Pollydore and taking the top podium spot.
Boodram, Grant-Stuart, Michael Anthony and Eastman, completed the top six paying positions in that order, while DeNobrega (3), Pollydore and Boodram (2 each) and Holder 1 shared the eight sprint prizes that were up for grabs.
Earlier in the day, Romello Crawford got things started when he took the 12 to 14 Boys and Girls event from Alfie Sonaram and Jason Jordan, Niles retained the Veterans Under-50 title with his win over Bachel Samaroo even as Virgil Jones took the Over-50 category from Courtney Hackett.
The Junior/Juveniles 10-lap event was won by Jabon Crawford over Mario King and Eastman in that order, before Stephanoo Husbands maintained his grip on the Mountain Bike riders, with another win over Clyde Jacobs and Ozia MacAulay.
Jeremiah Harrison was an easy winner in the BMX 6 to 9 category over Alexander Leung, followed by Taran Garbharan’s victory in the 9 to 12 division over Sherwin Sampson and Jamar Huliger, Rawle Small’s win in the 12 to 14 division over Bryton John and Tyrique Khan, and Jamal John’s win over Adrian Sharma in the BMX Open category.
Jaya and Vikash Panday, the daughter and son of Managing Director of P&P Insurance Brokers and Consultants Limited, Bishwa Panday,, deputised for their father at the presentation ceremony which took place shortly after DeNobrega’s win.
The riders will now turn their attention to the West Demerara roadways at 08:00hrs  today when they compete in the 14th Annual Guyana Oil Company GUYOIL/CASTROL-sponsored 50-mile race from Wales Police Station to Bushy Park and back to the Demerara Harboor Bridge.
