AS action in the Essequibo leg of the Banks National Pools Competition heats up, chief steward of the competition, Diyanand Chetram aka Dave, has expressed satisfaction at the overwhelming response. “We knew that the competition was going to be big but we never envisaged that it was going to be this big, as the response has really been great,” Chetram told Chronicle Sport.
He pointed out that the competition is being run at three locations in Essequibo in an effort to select the top three representatives. The locations are Kumar’s Liquor Bar, Shaheeda’s Bar and Zennun.
Chetram pointed out that the competition which commenced last Sunday and was held at Kumar’s Liquor Restaurant had a tremendous response. So great was the response that they were unable to complete it. As such, it would continue this weekend with Shaheeda’s bar and Zennun set to host their respective legs as well with games at all three locations commencing at 13.30hrs
“Despite the first leg not completed, the other two locations will still hold their legs this weekend as the finals will be played on Monday at Zennun,” a satisfied-looking Chetram said.
He expressed his gratitude and thanks to all those who entered the competition noting that the crowd support was very large as many persons came out to see who the better Pool players are. “The crowd support was really good as many persons wanted to know who was going to win. So many people were there and this is the type of response and support that we were looking forward to,” he said.
Chetram noted that persons who are still interested in competing can do so, pointing out that the requirement to enter the competition is the purchase of six Premium beers. “Once they purchase the six Premium beers it’s an automatic entry into the competition,” he said.
The chief steward noted that while his responsibility is one that has a number of challenges he is up to the task, expressing his satisfaction at the overall management of the competition.
“I am very pleased with the level and standard of players that this competition has attracted. I foresee the other venues executing their legs incident- and issue-free, taking into consideration that such a competition can attract a number of issues and confusion,” he said.
Commenting on the prizes that will be up on offer, Chetram related that the top three finishers will walk away with $60 000, $40 000 and $20 000 along with trophies. “While we are cognisant that Pools is a passionate sport here in Essequibo and the fact that bragging rights would be involved, we have ensured that we reward the winners in a very tangible way,” he said.
He added that looking at the quality of players in the Essequibo leg he is confident that Essequibo will do well in the national playoff. He stressed that the players are all eager to represent Essequibo, sounding a warning to Demerara and Berbice who will also be represented in the national playoffs.
“We will be sending three representatives to the national playoffs and we are very confident of their ability to do well,” he declared. The competition is being sponsored by Banks DIH limited.
