THE prosecution closed its case in the Zeeburg murder trial yesterday and subsequently defence counsel for the 22-year-old murder accused Hameraj Rambachan, called ‘Arun’, made a no-case submission on behalf of her client. Defence counsel Mrs. Kim Kyte-John in association with attorney-at-law Miss Faye Barker made a no-case submission, presenting arguments to Justice Brassington Reynolds in the absence of the jury.
At the conclusion of the arguments after hearing the defence and prosecution lawyers Miss Renita Singh and Miss Dhanika Singh, Justice Reynolds decided that his ruling will be delivered on Monday morning.
Hameraj Rambachan is on trial for the murder of 49-year-old Rajpatie Jagroo, called ‘Baite’, of 103 Zeeburg, West Coast Demerara.
Rajpattie had lived with her two daughters – Parbattie Ramlakhan, 19, called  Sharda, who was the one-time girlfriend of the  accused, who  used to visit Sharda at her mother’s home. The other daughter is Basmattie Sewsankar, called Lilly.
After the friendship between Sharda and Hameraj came to an end in 2009, it is said that the accused was attempting to mend the friendship but he met with opposition.
According to witnesses, on the night of 21st July 2009, Lily and her mother were in bed when according to Lily she was awakened by a scream.
When she jumped up she witnessed Hameraj in bed stabbing away at her mother. Lily said that she attempted to pull her mother away but she was also wounded on the left shoulder and head.
Her mother died the same night from injuries received.
The hearing continues on Monday when the judge will rule on the defence’s no-case submission.
